Beaverton Rural Schools to honor longtime coach
Gladwin County Record
BEAVERTON — Roy Johnston has seen plenty of players in his 36 years of coaching basketball at Beaverton High School. And plenty of Roy’s Boys have reaped the benefits of Johnston’s coaching expertise. Who better then to name Beaverton’s gym after?
Beaverton School Board certainly felt that way, and have memorialized Johnston by commemorating the gym where he spent so much time in his honor.
"It is fitting that the gymnasium be named in honor of Roy F. Johnston in recognition of his contribution to our school and student athletes," said Joan Cashin, Superintendent.
A ceremony bestowing the honor upon the longtime educator and coach will be held on Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, between the Beaverton versus Gladwin JV and varsity basketball games.
The public, along with alumni and former Beaverton basketball players are encouraged to attend.
Coach Johnston has amassed over 600 victories in his coaching career. Although this is his 36th year coaching in Beaverton, he previously coached in Montrose, Yale, and Howell before coming to Beaverton in 1971.
Coach Johnston’s coaching statistics speak to his success. During his tenure at Beaverton he has coached both boys and girls basketball teams. His boys’ basketball teams have earned 16 Jack Pine Conference championships, 10 District championships, four Regional championships, and one quarterfinal victory.
Die-hard Beaverton basketball fans well remember the excitement of the 1984 trip to the State semi-finals.
During his four year tenure as girls’ basketball coach, the teams earned one District championship and had a winning record all four years.
Fellow coach and friend Jim Emery couldn’t agree more with the board’s decision to dedicate Beaverton’s gym to Johnston.
“I cannot think of a better way to honor someone who has done as much for the school and the community,” Emery said. “Roy expects his players to work hard and be good people, not only on the court, but also in their lives after high school.”
