Smokers' Corner

There's been a lot of talk about sports and such on this blog, but does anyone remember Smokers' Corner just outside of the school?  I was a regular there during our freshman year, but stopped going once I started playing sports during our sophomore year.  Even though we were doing A LOT of things there we shouldn't have been doing (I was cradled in the arms of sweet Mistress Cannibus many times before class and during lunch).  Anyone else hang out there?  I know there's a lot of stories from that place.

I heard that the land was owned by Mrs. Smith and she allowed smokers to use it so they wouldn't have to go so far off campus to light up.  I wonder if that's true...

Also, what in the hell possessed us to stand outside in sub-zero Michigan winter weather to smoke a cigarette?  That nicotine addiction could make us do the stupidest things...

...so let's hear some of your stories!

What would you do?

OK

Time to strike it up again, everyone should be free of the New Years's hangover by now.   Are you retracting back to your life after the reunion?   I hope not. totally,  you still have friends here too you know.

OK so if you could have done one thing, I MEAN JUST ONE, different in High School, what would it be, and be as specific as possible, hey its 25 or more years later relax.  If you screwed up it won't matter.

New Look for Site

Hey all - I'm working to give a new look to the site.  Please let me know what you think when you get a chance.  Also, please let me know about anything you would like to see on this site.

I plan to put new pictures up this weekend, thanks to Rhonda!  She sent me some great ones from the reunion.  If anyone else has some they would like to share, send 'em my way!

As for the yearbook - I am going to Colorado in a week and a half, and a buddy of mine there is going to get the files off of my old hard drive.  If all goes well, the yearbook should be up and running not long after I get back from there.  Sorry it has taken so long to get it on here, but you know how life can get in the way!

I look fowward to hearing your feedback and suggestions.

Midland Daily newpaper on Roy

Johnston's dedication honored

Daily News photos/BRETT MARSHALL

"It's a great honor, I just want to get it over with," Beaverton High boys basketball coach Roy Johnston said with a laugh while in his office filling out the roster before Friday night's game. Johnston has coached at Beaverton for the past 36 years.

Roy Johnston hopes to keep on coaching Beaverton basketball long enough for his grandchildren to come under his wing.
And when they play, it just might be in the Roy F. Johnston Gymnasium.
The gym was dedicated to Johnston between the junior varsity and varsity games between Beaverton and rival Gladwin on Friday night.
Johnston is a member of the coaching elite, with more than 600 wins in a 36-year career, 16 Jack Pine Conference titles, 10 district titles and four regional titles. He also is the school’s athletics director.
The ceremony also featured a little surprise in addition to a plaque of appreciation and the dedication.
Beaverton Mayor Nila Frei was on hand, armed not with a basketball, but with a proclamation from the city council marking Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, as a special day.

"I would like to proclaim this day Roy F. Johnston Day," she announced to the crowd, packed into the gym decorated with Beaverton Beavers signs. One, sparkly red letters on a black background, said "RED RAVE," a theme carried out in all the fans wearing the Beaverton school color.
At the presentation of the wooden sign proclaiming the dedication (it is to hang above the gym doors) former player Brent Mishler spoke of his beloved coach.
Mishler said Johnston’s teams exemplify discipline, and are used to hearing their coach telling them to play hard through the game "no matter the score." They play as teams, without single players showboating; they play with sound fundamentals.
"Beaverton basketball has always been about the fundamentals," Mishler said, adding players spend more time with Johnston learning the trade than the tricks.

As Roy Johnston thanked his wife, Judy, and his family for their patience and support, Johnston's daughter-in-law, Stephanie, made a halo with her hands and placed it above Judy's head.

Mishler, now coaching a team himself, said he’s found himself passing on Johnston’s wisdom in working with his own players.
"I can’t think of a better coach I’d like to emulate," he said.
Johnston, surrounded by family including his wife, Judy, their five kids and a flock of grandchildren, thanked many for the honor, including his family, the school board and administration, as well as other coaches.
"Now enjoy a good game of basketball," he said.

Roy’s gym

Beaverton Rural Schools to honor longtime coach
Gladwin County Record

BEAVERTON — Roy Johnston has seen plenty of players in his 36 years of coaching basketball at Beaverton High School. And plenty of Roy’s Boys have reaped the benefits of Johnston’s coaching expertise. Who better then to name Beaverton’s gym after?

Beaverton School Board certainly felt that way, and have memorialized Johnston by commemorating the gym where he spent so much time in his honor.

"It is fitting that the gymnasium be named in honor of Roy F. Johnston in recognition of his contribution to our school and student athletes," said Joan Cashin, Superintendent.

A ceremony bestowing the honor upon the longtime educator and coach will be held on Friday, Jan. 12, 2007, between the Beaverton versus Gladwin JV and varsity basketball games.

The public, along with alumni and former Beaverton basketball players are encouraged to attend.

Coach Johnston has amassed over 600 victories in his coaching career. Although this is his 36th year coaching in Beaverton, he previously coached in Montrose, Yale, and Howell before coming to Beaverton in 1971.

Coach Johnston’s coaching statistics speak to his success. During his tenure at Beaverton he has coached both boys and girls basketball teams. His boys’ basketball teams have earned 16 Jack Pine Conference championships, 10 District championships, four Regional championships, and one quarterfinal victory.

Die-hard Beaverton basketball fans well remember the excitement of the 1984 trip to the State semi-finals.

During his four year tenure as girls’ basketball coach, the teams earned one District championship and had a winning record all four years.

Fellow coach and friend Jim Emery couldn’t agree more with the board’s decision to dedicate Beaverton’s gym to Johnston.

“I cannot think of a better way to honor someone who has done as much for the school and the community,” Emery said. “Roy expects his players to work hard and be good people, not only on the court, but also in their lives after high school.”
